He has also played the trombone, (having been a teaching member of the Band of 78, a youth band in which he started as a pupil whilst still at school) for the past thirty one years, although that band has sadly folded now. David has performed music across a range of styles and has been a member of the tribute band Almost The Blues Brothers. David has always been interested in space travel and astronomy, an interest which was fuelled by Carl Sagan’s Cosmos in 1980, but his love of science fiction started during his childhood with the original Star Trek and Dr Who. Later shows such as UFO and Space 1999 fuelled his interest further, but it was after the release of Star Wars in 1977 that he began to look at a broader range of science and fiction. The discovery of Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings, EE Doc Smith’s Family d’Alembert series and Arthur C Clarke’s 2001: A Space Odyssey all helped to expand his experience of the genre, while some of Clarke’s other works - The Songs Of Distant Earth, the Rama series and his sequels to 2001 – continue to inspire with stunning visions of the future. Other writers, including Stephen King, James Herbert, Craig Thomas and Tom Clancy were also widely read. |

As his first novel, Dragons in the Sky, began to take shape it seemed logical to dip into the genre on which he had grown up, with the thought ‘what if..?’ forming the basis for the writing. The sequel - Shattered Truths - followed this format with David's interest in the manned exploration of space forming the basis. Plans for the final book in the trilogy are already underway, with ideas for the story currently bouncing around. One thing is certain, however - if you read and enjoyed Dragons in the Sky you will love the excitement and broad scope of storytelling in Shattered Truths. As for the final book, well only one person knows what that will bring, and he's not letting anyone in on the secret just yet! |
